day 8: hospital

sam pulled up to the emergency room entrance. no one ran out to help her. she parked and hopped out of the car.

the hospital looked deserted.

"i'm going to be right back," she told her parents. "i'm just going to go find a doctor."

she shut the car door and walked inside the hospital. her footsteps were loud in the silence. the waiting room was littered with bloody corpses, some sitting in chairs and some collapsed on the floor. sam turned and went down a hallway to see a dead man slumped against the wall, his face and clothes bloody. she noticed something and, looking a little closer, realized he was one of the doctors.

she walked into the adjoining room. it was large and full of hospital beds, some hiding behind curtains and some fully-exposed. everything was spotted with red, bodies hanging off the beds and strewn on the floor. sam walked through that room and into the next one.

it was just more of the same. no one was moving. the doctors and nurses were scattered on the floor along with their patients.

further into the hospital, sam walked down a long hallway. she peered into the rooms, searching for any sign of life.

nothing.

on her way back to the entrance, sam noticed the nurses' desk. she walked over to it and took a look. papers and medical charts covered the desk and floor.

the door to a room behind the nurses' desk was slightly ajar. sam slowly opened it wider and stepped inside. it appeared to be a storage room. shelves full of medicine and instruments lined the walls. some shelves had been overturned and were now lying on the floor, their contents turned to broken glass and puddles of fluid.

against the far wall, a nurse was slumped against what looked like a glass fridge. keys were still sticking out of the lock. this nurse's face, unlike the other corpses', wasn't covered in red. sam got closer and noticed a syringe sticking out of the lady's arm. next to her on the floor was an empty bottle labeled "morphine."

sam didn't know what to do anymore. standing in a hospital full of corpses, she had to wonder if a doctor would even be any help.
