day 6: home
sam's house was empty. the principal had sent everyone home early, so it would be about six hours before her parents returned from work.
she picked up the phone and dialed liz's number. sam didn't know what would happen with the calculus exam, but she didn't want to risk failing. the chances of getting to stay home tuesday, too, seemed slim.
it rang over and over again, but no one picked up.
sam hung up and went over to the couch, turning on the tv.
"according to the board of education, all schools in the local district will remain closed until further notice..."
she was happy to hear that: it meant she wouldn't have to take the exam anytime soon.
sam's cell phone rang, and she turned off the tv as she picked up her phone. liz's number glowed on the display screen.
"hey liz!" sam answered. "guess what, school is going to be cancelled for awhile!"
there was a bit of coughing on the other end.
"liz, are you okay?"
"yeah, i'm doing okay," liz finally said. "i just have the flu or something, that's all."
"are your parents there?"
"no, they're at work," liz answered. "like i said, it's just the flu or something. i'll be fine."
they talked a little bit more before getting off the phone.
"god, she really does sound awful," sam said to herself.
she couldn't believe liz's parents had left her there all alone. it seemed like someone should be staying there taking care of her.
