day 8: city
she didn't know what to do. sam didn't want to take the car. her parents' car. she didn't want to have to drag their bodies-
sam shook her head and dried her eyes with the back of her sleeve. she was walking away from the car, and she hadn't even realized she'd stood up. her walking was unsteady, uncertain. she didn't know where she was going, couldn't focus her mind enough to choose a destination.
it looked worse here than in her little neighbhorhood right outside the city. skyscrapers smoldered. newspapers and garbage and abandoned cars littered the streets. she could hear distant sounds of wailing, muffled by layers of glass and steel. the city was in ruins.
sam heard something and looked up to see planes flying overhead. she stopped in her tracks and watched them until the tall buildings finally hid them from view.
moments later her ears were assaulted by a loud noise. the ground shook, and she heard screams from far away. soon the screaming came closer, and sam saw people running through the streets. again, a deafening noise shook the earth, and this time sam was able to see fire licking the sky down into the heart of the city.
not sure just what was going on, she knew enough to run. she turned and joined the scattered handfuls of people fleeing in the streets. the sounds of explosions and screams could be heard in the distance.
a plane flew overhead. sam looked up and saw something falling towards the earth. adrenaline filling her veins, she ran faster.
the bomb hit the ground and exploded into fire. the buildings and running people were engulfed in flames. sam barely had time to feel the heat of the explosion before turning to ash.
